I know we’ve been talking about beards a lot lately, but hey, a lot of awesome guys have them and these subjects are important for proper beard care! Today our beard expert William is going to discuss how to properly apply beard oil.
More often than naught, the simple thing in life are much more complicated than they initially seem – and nothing more embodies that phrase than the simple act of applying beard oil. To the uninitiated, applying oil in your beard is as simple as pouring a bunch in your hand and rubbing into your face; but as always, the devil is in the details.
Here’s how to apply beard oil (properly)
NOTE: Before we go any further, make sure that you’re actually using beard oil and not just some general hair care product. Yes, you can buy things like argan oil for much cheaper than beard oil. But the difference between a general bottle of argan oil and say our beard oil, is that our beard oil is specifically formulated for beards. I.e. before creating this classic beard oil hundreds of hours of research and actual testing went into it’s creation to find the right types and right amounts of each oil to do the perfect job! Using general products can work in a pinch, but you’ll be fighting a daily battle to keep your beard soft and flake free.
To get started you’ll need beard oil and a beard comb.
Now let’s get started!
Clean Your Beard
No matter what it is your doing, a clean beard is a happy beard. Before you start putting oil in your beard, you’re going to have to clean your beard of any dirt, debris, or dead skin. If it’s been a few days, giving your beard a good wash would be a great idea. Be sure to pat your beard dry when you’re done.
However, if you’ve recently washed your beard you may just want to give it a rinse at most. If you wash your beard too much, you run the risk of stripping out all of the natural oils, which can really upset the balance of moisture on your face; even with beard oil. You only need to wash your beard about 3 times per week -total. You should be showering daily, but, there is a huge difference between getting your beard wet in the shower and washing it with a shampoo. The perfect time to apply beard oil is when you get out of the shower and have dried your beard.
Brush Or Comb Your Beard
A well-kept beard can make it a lot easier to evenly distribute the beard oil. If you have a bunch of tangles and clumps in your beard you run the risk of one spot getting more oil than others; or worse, none at all.
If it can be helped, you should use a natural wooden brush comb, like our handy dandy Beard Comb. Your beard doesn’t have to be perfect, so don’t worry about styling your beard and making it look pretty. Just brush it straight to get all the tangles out and you’ll be fine.
Pour the Oil and Apply
Now that your beard is ready, it’s time to apply the beard oil. Open the bottle and pour a dime-sized amount into your palm. If you pour too much, wash your hands and start over. Too much beard oil can not only make your hair look more greasy, but it can also make your dry skin worse. Remember: you’re trying to maintain a balance, so all things in moderation so always start with less than you think you need – you can always apply more.
Once you’ve got your oil poured, rub your hands together until the oil becomes warm.
To apply the beard oil start by going against the grain start underneath the beard. The key is to get the beard oil into the roots and skin beneath the hair to condition the beard properly. Then without pouring more oil slide your hands down the sides and front of your beard working the beard oil into the beard. Do not forget the moustache, especially on the underside.
Comb Gently Again
After you’ve applied the oil; wash your hands, take your comb and brush your beard once more. This will not only help style your beard, it will also help more evenly distribute the oil through your beard.
Once you’ve completed that; congratulations, you’re done! Putting oil into your beard is surprisingly simple, but as we’ve seen today there’s a lot more to it than one might think. Now that you know how to properly put beard oil in your hair, go out there get that beard shiny and soft!
Don’t forget to apply beard oil at night too for added protection. You won’t need to go through the exact routine at night as mentioned above but if you got your beard extremely dirty throughout the day –you should.
