I am going to explain how to wash your beard in the steps below.
Beard Wash: The Ideal Solution
If you would like to clean your beard properly, you should only use beard wash. Regular hair shampoo is not recommended for cleaning beards since it may contain harsh chemicals. You should always keep in mind that the skin on your face is much more sensitive than that on the scalp. Another reason I recommend beard wash is because beard wash is formulated to have additional oils included in it. When you wash your beard these oils are typically stripped out, but your skin and hair actually need these oils to stay healthy and to prevent the hair from becoming dry and brittle.
So beard wash will help reapply lost oils and overall improve the look and health of your beard.
What To Look For In A Good Beard Shampoo
A good beard shampoo should have a few important oils in it. Below are a few of the oils you should find in your beard shampoo:
- Coconut Oil
- Olive Oil
- Sunflower Seed Oil
Not only are these oils great for your skin, they are great for the beard hairs. Shampoos that do not offer these types of oils are simply stripping much-needed oil from your beard.
A good beard shampoo should also not have phenoxyethanol in it as this can potentially damage the beard and skin. Sadly, this ingredient is in many of the beard shampoos on the market.
How to Wash Your Beard
You should start by wetting your beard using warm water, which makes the shower the best place to wash your beard. Next, apply your beard wash generously and use your fingertips and massage deeply in the beard so that you can reach the skin. You should do this to ensure that your skin is clean and properly hydrated.
Use your fingers to apply the product evenly on your beard ensuring that you shift the hair in all directions. There is no need to aggressively scrub and you can simply gently massage into the beard.
Finally, rinse your beard using water moving the hair in all directions to make sure that no residue of the beard wash remains in the beard.
Tips For Rinsing Your Beard
You should be mindful of the temperature of the water used to wash and rinse your beard. Very hot water can dry your skin and can affect proper beard development. Warm water is the best option when you start rinsing your beard. Warm water is preferable to cold water because it opens the skin pores.
You should also continue using warm water to rinse the shampoo out of the beard. Once you rinse out all the shampoo the beard should be very clean.
Drying Your Beard
Once you have finished washing your beard, you should dry it completely because you can have some irritation on the skin if any water is left in your beard.
The best way to dry your beard is by patting a clean towel throughout the area gently. You should be gentle when drying your beard because wet hair tends to be more delicate. Plus, if you’re rough with your beard while drying you can actually end up pulling or ripping hairs out. Not only is pulling hair out painful but it damages the beard.
How Often Should You Wash Your Beard?
I mentioned this early on but let me repeat this part. You should only directly apply a beard shampoo 3-4 times per week. You can wash your beard as little as 2 times per week but I would avoid less than that as you want to make sure the beard is clean. If you wash your beard with shampoo more than 4 times per week (every other day) you can increase the chance of drying your beard out which could lead to brittle hair or beard dandruff.
Fortunately, beard oil helps rehydrate and moisturize the beard, so you should rarely ever suffer from a dry beard. Make sure you’re using our Beard Oil Guide to understand how it works and why you should use it daily.
It is quite clear that cleaning your beard properly is not rocket science but many men do not yet know these steps. All you should do is follow the tips discussed in this article you will have a truly amazing beard.
